Joseph Keddie is a Professor of Soft Matter Physics at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the Soft Matter, Biological and Medical Physics Group within the School of Mathematics and Physics. He also serves as a Royal Society Industry Fellow and a Fellow of the Institute for Sustainability. His roles include Senator representing the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Senior Tutor for Professional Training in Physics, and former Chair of the Institute of Physics' Polymer Physics Group (2011-2017). Keddie holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University (1993) following MS (1990) and BS/BA degrees from Alfred University (1987).
Research focuses on soft matter systems, particularly polymer colloids and sustainable materials. Key areas include biocoatings for carbon capture/oxygen production, self-stratifying coatings, and surfactant-free systems. Techniques employed include NMR profiling, ion beam analysis (e.g., elastic recoil detection), small-angle neutron scattering, and advanced microscopy. Industrial collaborations span Avery Dennison, Syngenta, and Pulpex Ltd, with emphasis on developing bioprocessed barrier coatings from non-food waste. Major projects include Leverhulme Trust-funded bioencapsulation studies (2019) and Innovate UK initiatives on recyclable packaging (2023-2025).
Scientific achievements include the 2001 Paterson Medal for polymer dynamics research and the 2017 Thomas Graham Lecture. He co-authored over 150 publications and two patents, including a Springer book on latex film formation with Alex Routh. Current work explores bacterial viability in coatings and novel adhesive chemistries, advancing sustainable materials for packaging and biomedical applications. His h-index stands at 53 (Google Scholar).
Advising and grants involve leading multi-year research programs funded by EPSRC, Royal Society, and industry partnerships. The Professional Training program under his leadership places ~20 physics students annually in industrial placements, emphasizing career development. Lab facilities include the Surrey Ion Beam Centre and collaborations with institutions like King's College London and the University of Cambridge.
