Simone Brioni is a Professor in the Department of English at Stony Brook University, with affiliations in the Departments of Africana Studies and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. He earned his PhD from the University of Warwick (2013) and has held research and teaching roles across institutions in Italy, the UK, and the US.

Brioni’s research focuses on the intersection of Migration Studies, Postcolonial Theory, and Italian Cultural Studies, with an emphasis on Somali and Eritrean diasporas. He has co-authored four documentaries—Aulò, La quarta via, Maka, and Beyond the Frame—and published monographs such as The Somali Within and L’Italia, l’altrove. His work explores how collaborative and multimedia approaches can decolonize Italian cultural narratives.
Notable scientific awards and grants include research fellowships from Warwick and Stony Brook University, as well as multiple grants for interdisciplinary projects. Brioni co-edits the Transnational Cultures book series and serves on advisory boards for institutions like the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook and the journal Zapruder World.
His documentaries and publications analyze Italy’s colonial legacy through oral histories and artistic interventions, partnering with institutions such as Kimerafilm and the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
