Simona Della Valle is a Researcher at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the School of Molecular Sciences. She holds a PhD in Synthetic Biology from the University of Oxford (2023), where her research focused on metabolic engineering of Cupriavidus necator for CO2 valorization. Currently, she leads projects in the Fritz Lab, engineering Vibrio natriegens for scalable CO2 utilization. Her work bridges biochemistry, synthetic biology, and chemical engineering to advance sustainable biomanufacturing.
Education: Bachelor’s and Master’s in Biochemistry (University College London, 2016-2020); PhD in Synthetic Biology (University of Oxford, 2023).
Research interests include developing molecular toolkits for non-model bacteria, metabolic engineering for CO2 conversion, and evolutionary engineering. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address climate change through biotechnological innovation.
Key contributions span CO2-to-value pathways (e.g., acetate valorization) and engineered microbial systems. Her work aligns with UN SDGs for climate action (SDG13) and affordable clean energy (SDG7).
- Awards:
- Impact Award for Public Engagement (2021)
- Rabin Medal (UCL top graduate, 2018)
Labs/Teams: Active in the Fritz Lab at UWA, collaborating on marine bacterium engineering for bioprocess optimization.
