Georg Fritz

Georg Fritz is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia (UWA) School of Molecular Sciences, with affiliations to the UWA Oceans Institute and the Australian Centre for RNA Therapeutics in Cancer. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics from Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (2012), followed by postdoctoral research on antibiotic resistance mechanisms at the Biocenter in Munich. As a research group leader at the SYNMIKRO Center for Synthetic Microbiology (2014–2019), he developed interdisciplinary approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance. His current research integrates synthetic biology, microbiology, and computational modeling to address challenges like microbial plastic degradation and bioplastic production.

Key research interests include antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, engineering microbial solutions for environmental remediation, and synthetic genetic circuit design. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and sustainable resource management.

Recent publications highlight advancements in synthetic biology tools (e.g., Vibrio natriegens as a rapid chassis), antibiotic resistance pathways, and plastic degradation strategies. His grants include a Future Fellowship (2024–2028) for Vibrio natriegens research and collaborations on carbon capture technologies.

Awards include a Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2021). He actively participates in initiatives like the Synthetic Biology Australasia Conference and advises on Woodside FutureLabs projects.

His lab, Fritz Lab, focuses on interdisciplinary microbiology and synthetic biology, with ongoing projects in microbial engineering and systems biology.
