Professor Simon Wilkinson is a Principal Investigator and CRUK Senior Fellow at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh. He holds the Chair of Autophagy and Tissue Homeostasis, focusing on autophagy mechanisms in cancer. His research bridges molecular biology, genomics, and tumor microenvironment dynamics.
- Education: BSc in Biochemistry (1st class, University of Edinburgh, 1996), PhD in Tumour Cell Signalling (ICR London, 2000-2005)
Research Interests include autophagy in tissue homeostasis and cancer, particularly its role in gene expression regulation via NF-κB signaling, inflammation, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. His lab investigates how autophagy influences tumorigenesis and therapeutic responses.
Grants and Projects include a CRUK Senior Fellowship (£2.1M, 2020-2026) for ER-phagy networks in cancer, alongside CRUK Studentships. Collaborations span institutions like University of Munich, Goethe University, CRUK Beatson Institute, and CRUK Manchester Institute.
- Scientific Awards: Cancer Research UK Senior Fellowship (2020), Career Development Fellowship (2012)
Students Supervised: Current PhD students include Jocelyn Bisson, Tian En Lim, and Carla Salomo Coll. Past students include Mihaela Bozic and Fraser Millar.
Labs and Teams: Leads a research group within the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, collaborating with experts like Christian Behrends (Munich) and Ivan Dikic (Goethe University). Technical expertise includes protein-protein interaction screens, CRISPR/Cas9, super-resolution microscopy, and transgenic mouse models.
