Kevin Ryan FRSE is Professor of Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Glasgow and Senior Group Leader at the CRUK Scotland Institute, where he leads a research group focused on understanding programmed cell death mechanisms in cancer. His work addresses critical challenges in cancer therapy related to drug resistance arising from inhibition of cell death pathways in tumors.
Dr. Ryan completed his BSc in Biochemistry (Honours) at the University of Liverpool in 1991 and earned his PhD from the Beatson Institute (University of Glasgow) in 1996 under George Birnie. After postdoctoral training with Karen Vousden at the National Cancer Institute in the US, he returned to establish his research group at the Beatson Institute in 2001.
His research program investigates both known cell death regulators and novel proteins controlling cell death and chemosensitivity, with particular focus on apoptosis, autophagy, and cancer metabolism. The group's work spans from basic molecular mechanisms to translational applications, aiming to improve clinical regimens and identify new therapeutic targets. His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on autophagy regulation, lysosomal function, and metabolic control of cell fate decisions in cancer.
Ryan has received numerous prestigious awards including being elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2016), Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2022), and Member of Academia Europaea (2022). He was awarded the Tenovus Medal in 2012 and the Cancer Researcher Award from the European Association for Cancer Research in 2010.
Beyond his laboratory research, Professor Ryan serves as Chair-elect of the British Association for Cancer Research (BACR) and Editor-in-Chief of the non-profit FEBS society journal Molecular Oncology. He leads an international team of scientists including postdoctoral researchers and PhD students investigating various aspects of cell death in cancer, with projects spanning liver cancer, immune cancers, and fundamental mechanisms of autophagy regulation.
