Ivan Dikic is a distinguished Professor and Director of the Institute of Biochemistry II at Goethe University Medical School in Frankfurt, Germany. He has held this position since 2009 and was previously Professor at the same institution from 2002-2008. Additionally, he serves as Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Split, Croatia since 2002. Dikic founded and directed the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences at Goethe University from 2009-2013.
Education:
- Medical Doctor (Summa cum laude) from University of Zagreb Medical School (1986-1991)
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University of Zagreb and New York University under Prof. J. Schlessinger (1991-1995)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at New York University Medical Center (1995-1997)
Dikic's research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cellular quality control, with particular emphasis on ubiquitin networks and selective autophagy. His work explores how ubiquitin signaling pathways regulate cancer development, DNA repair, and molecular signaling processes. He has made significant contributions to understanding ubiquitin receptors at the proteasome and quality control pathways essential for cellular homeostasis. His research bridges basic molecular mechanisms with potential therapeutic applications in cancer and other diseases.
Analysis of Dikic's recent publications reveals a strong focus on ubiquitin signaling pathways, particularly linear ubiquitination and its role in NF-κB signaling, inflammation, and cancer. His work spans structural biology, cell biology, and translational medicine, with consistent themes around protein degradation mechanisms, cellular quality control, and host-pathogen interactions. The publications demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach connecting molecular mechanisms to disease pathogenesis and potential therapeutic interventions.
Scientific Awards:
- Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (2013)
- Ernst Jung Prize for Medicine (2013)
- William C. Rose Award (2013)
- German Cancer Prize (2010)
- Member of German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2010)
- Sir Hans Krebs Prize (2009)
- AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cancer Research (2006)
- Member of EMBO (2004)
Dikic has received substantial research funding including an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (2010). He has served on prestigious scientific review committees including the Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award and Pezcoller Foundation-AACR Award Selection Committee. His leadership extends to directing research networks such as LOEWE Ub (2014-2017) and serving as Vice-Speaker of the Cluster of Excellence for Macromolecular Complexes in Frankfurt.
Dikic leads a research group focused on ubiquitin signaling at the Institute of Biochemistry II. His laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms of protein quality control, with particular emphasis on the roles of ubiquitin in autophagy, DNA repair, and inflammation. The research environment includes collaborations through the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences, which he founded, and participation in European networks like PROTEOSTASIS.
