Simon Viel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at Carleton University, affiliated with the Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute. He works on large-scale low-background experiments at SNOLAB, including DEAP-3600 for dark matter search and nEXO for neutrinoless double beta decay.
- PhD in Physics from University of British Columbia (2014)
- Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar (2011-2014)
- B.Sc. in Physics from Université Laval (2008)
His research focuses on dark matter detection using liquid argon/xenon, software development for detector simulation and machine learning, and silicon photomultiplier characterization. Recent work includes DEAP-3600 position reconstruction and SiPM suitability for noble liquid experiments.
The latest publications span 2025 and 2024, covering SiPM tile QA/QC, 39Ar half-life measurements, machine learning in recoil discrimination, and radon assay techniques. These align with his broader interests in detector R&D, background modeling, and international collaborations.
- Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar (2011-2014)
He supervises a diverse team of PhD, Master’s, and Honours students, with past advisees transitioning to roles in nuclear labs, financial data, and academic research. Collaborative work includes ATLAS detector upgrades at CERN and mechanical ventilator development during the pandemic.
