Dr. Simon Thornton is a Senior Lecturer (Education Focused) at RMIT University's Learning & Teaching department, affiliated with the College of Business & Law. He has worked at RMIT since 2010, initially in the School of Marketing and later as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Specialist. His roles include program management for the Bachelor of Business (Professional Practice) and coordination of Business Internship courses across undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Melbourne and Singapore.
Research interests focus on WIL, IPL design, ethical considerations in internships, and student wellbeing. He has expanded internship participation from 75 students (2018) to over 300 annually (2019–2023), despite challenges like pandemic lockdowns. Professional memberships include the Australian Collaboration Education Network (ACEN) and National Association of Field Experience Administrators (NAFEA).
Teaching responsibilities include courses like Impact Academy, Professional Apprentice series, and Business Beyond Borders: Vietnam. He leads 8 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate internship courses.
