Professor Simon Sweeney holds the position of Professor of International Political Economy at the University of York’s School for Business and Society. He joined full-time in 2011 after prior roles at Sheffield Hallam University and York St John University. His academic career spans disciplines including politics, management, and English Language Teaching, reflecting his multidisciplinary approach. He earned an MA in Linguistics and ELT from the University of York (1990) and a PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Leeds, focusing on the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP).
Prof. Sweeney’s research focuses on European security and defense policy, EU integration dynamics, and pedagogical innovations in higher education. He has authored influential works such as Europe, the State and Globalisation (2005/2016) and European Union in the Global Context (2024). His recent work addresses AI-driven challenges in education, generative AI’s impact on assessment integrity, and geopolitical implications for business education.
His teaching contributions include modules on International Political Economy and strategic management, with a strong emphasis on learner-centered practices and employability. He currently serves as the School’s International Students Coordinator, advocating for student mobility and internationalization. Prof. Sweeney has received prestigious awards, including the National Teaching Fellowship (2006) and a Senior Fellowship from Advance HE (2019).
He has been actively involved in EU education policy initiatives, including roles as a UK Socrates Erasmus Bologna Expert (2006–2013). His external activities include memberships in the British International Studies Association and the Political Studies Association. Prof. Sweeney also engages in public commentary on EU-UK security relations and defense policy through think tanks like UK in a Changing Europe.
