Dr Simon Macdonald is a Lecturer in Modern European History at University College London (UCL). His research focuses on transnational and cultural history, particularly the French Revolution, examining themes like foreign communities, cosmopolitanism, and European interconnections. His current book project, Enemies of the Republic, explores British expatriates in Revolutionary Paris and the formation of nation-states.
Previously, he held research and teaching roles at institutions including Queen Mary University of London, Université Paris-VIII, and McGill University (via a Banting Fellowship). His major publications include edited volumes on the French Revolution and studies of 18th-century transnational networks.
Macdonald teaches courses such as A Global History of the French Revolution and Age of Revolutions: European History 1815–1870. He currently cannot supervise PhD students but offers regular office hours for academic support. His work has been recognized with the William L. Mitchell Prize (2015) for his analysis of English-language newspapers in Revolutionary France.
