Dr. Simon Lobelson is a full-time Lecturer in Voice and Opera at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. With a distinguished performing career spanning four continents and 95 operatic roles, he combines practical expertise with academic rigor in vocal pedagogy, contemporary opera research, and musical adjudication.
- Doctorate in Contemporary Opera (DMA, University of Sydney 2022)
- 2019-2022 RTP Commonwealth Government Scholarship recipient
- Helpmann Award nominee (2019) and APRA AMCOS award winner (2020, 2021)
His research focuses on contemporary vocal music and shattering operatic boundaries, with specific interest in:
- Modern vocal techniques
- Interdisciplinary performance art
- Language fluency (English/French/Italian/German)
- Conducting and adjudication methodologies
- Architectural sound design
Recent academic outputs include the 2024 collaborative work Menarche (NIDA), Antarctica (2022) with ASKO/Schönberg Ensemble, and Breaking Glass (2020) which won national acclaim. Supervisory roles include HDR and honours students since 2024.
