Simon Lewis is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath, where he leads research in synthetic organic chemistry with applications in bioimaging, drug discovery, and environmental sustainability. He is affiliated with the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies (CSCT), the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change, and the Centre for Doctoral Training in Real-Time Digital Water-Based Systems for Environmental Health Protection (RED-ALERT CDT). He is currently accepting doctoral students and serves as Principal Investigator on multiple research projects.

His research interests span synthetic organic chemistry with a focus on fluorescent probes for bioimaging, chemical sensing in marine environments, drug discovery for pancreatic cancer, and sustainable synthesis methodologies including biocatalysis. He also leads humanitarian projects such as developing water safety tests for use in the developing world. His work aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, clean water, and climate action.
The recent publications highlight a strong trend in developing azulene-based fluorescent probes and non-benzenoid fluorophores for applications in enzyme activity monitoring (e.g., carboxylesterase), mitophagy detection, and liver disease diagnostics. His work increasingly integrates sustainability, as seen in biomass utilization and green solvents, while advancing commercialization of sensor technologies through EPSRC-funded innovation awards.
He has secured significant research funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) for projects such as the development of AzuFluor™ dyes and autonomous environmental sensors. He is actively involved in knowledge transfer and technology commercialization.
- Principal Investigator, EPSRC IAA – Commercialization of Autonomous Sensors (2025–2026)
- PI, Non-Benzenoid Fluorophores for New Imaging Modalities (2023–2026)
- PI, NOISES – Nitrous Oxide In-Situ Environmental Sensors (2023–2024)
- PI, IAA – Development and Commercialisation of AzuFluor™ Fluorescent Dyes (2020–2021)
Simon Lewis supervises a research group focused on synthetic chemistry and its real-world applications. His team collaborates across disciplines, including with researchers in materials science, environmental engineering, and biomedicine. He contributes to the academic community through external PhD examinations and open data sharing via the University of Bath’s research portal.
