Dr. Simon L Bacon is a leading behavioural scientist at Concordia University, holding the prestigious FRQS co-Chair in AI and Digital Health for Health Behaviour Change and the CIHR SPOR Chair in Innovative, Patient-Oriented, Behavioural Clinical Trials. He serves as co-director of the Montreal Behavioural Medicine Centre (MBMC) and is a researcher at the CIUSSS-NIM, while co-leading the International Behavioural Trials Network and the Canadian Behavioural Interventions and Trials Network.
His educational foundation includes a PhD from the University of Birmingham, an MSc from De Montfort University, and a BSc (Hons) from the University of Warwick. These credentials underpin his multidisciplinary approach to behavioural science.
Dr. Bacon's research centers on behavioural medicine and intervention development targeting chronic disease prevention and management. His work spans obesity/bariatric care, stress physiology, digital behaviour change, and evidence synthesis. He investigates how health behaviours impact cardiovascular/respiratory diseases and COVID-19 outcomes, with growing focus on climate crisis implications for behavioural medicine. His methodology integrates epidemiological, psychophysiological, and mixed-methods approaches with strong patient engagement.
Recent publications reveal dominant trends in systematic reviews of bariatric interventions, COVID-19 behavioural impacts, and vaccine hesitancy research. His work increasingly bridges AI/digital health tools with traditional behavioural medicine, particularly through living evidence syntheses and patient-participatory trial designs.
His significant accolades include:
- Fellow of the Obesity Society (FTOS)
- Fellow of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (FCCS)
- Fellow of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research (FABMR)
- FRQS co-Chair in AI and Digital Health
- CIHR SPOR Chair in Behavioural Clinical Trials
Dr. Bacon actively supervises graduate students in Health and Exercise Science and Psychology programs. His research is funded by major agencies including CIHR, FRQ-S/SC, GACD, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, supporting innovative trials in behavioural interventions and digital health.
He directs the Montreal Behavioural Medicine Centre and co-leads two critical networks: the International Behavioural Trials Network (global collaboration hub) and the Canadian Behavioural Interventions and Trials Network (CBITN), which accelerate evidence translation into clinical practice through national partnerships.
