Shalini LAL is an Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Montreal. She holds the Canada Research Chair in Innovation and Technology for Youth Mental Health Services and is affiliated with the CRCHUM (Research Centre of the University of Montreal Hospital Centre) and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute. Her research focuses on improving access to mental health services for youth through innovative technologies, policy transformation, and participatory research methods.
Education: B.Sc. in Occupational Therapy (McGill University), M.Sc. in Psychiatry (McGill University), Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences (University of British Columbia), and postdoctoral training in Youth Mental Health and Health Informatics at McGill University and Douglas Institute.
Research Interests: Digital health solutions for youth mental health, telepsychiatry, service transformation models, first-episode psychosis care, and stakeholder engagement in healthcare innovation. She leads major initiatives like the PRISM-ACCESS Open Minds project and the Horyzons-Canada study, funded by CIHR, FRQS, and the Graham Boeckh Foundation. Her work emphasizes culturally adapted interventions and mixed-methods approaches.
Grants: Over 25 million CAD in funding from CIHR, FRQS, and private foundations. Current projects include Canada Research Chair funding (2022–2027) and clinical trials evaluating digital interventions for psychosis recovery.
Awards: NARSAD Young Investigator Grant (2014), FRQS Junior 1 Award, and multiple grants recognizing her contributions to youth mental health innovation.
Labs/Teams: Director of the Youth Mental Health and Technologies Lab. Collaborates internationally with teams in India and Australia on mental health service delivery improvements.
