Cara Tannenbaum is a Full Professor at the Université de Montréal, holding appointments in the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy. She is also a practicing geriatrician at the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM) and former holder of the Michel-Saucier Pharmaceutical Chair in Health and Aging (2008–2022). Her research focuses on optimizing pharmaceutical care for older adults, urinary continence, mental health indicators, and sex-specific analyses to combat ageism.
Dr. Tannenbaum earned her MD from McGill University (1994), specializing in geriatrics (2000), and holds a Master's in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (2002). She has held leadership roles including Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Gender and Health (2015–2022) and Ministerial Science Advisor at Health Canada (since 2019).
Her research spans deprescribing initiatives (e.g., Canadian Deprescribing Network), medication safety, and gender equity in healthcare. She has secured over $32 million in research funding from CIHR, FRQS, and international bodies. Key projects include the D-PRESCRIBE trial evaluating pharmacist interventions and the CACTUS-D study addressing urinary incontinence stigma.
Awarded the Order of Canada (2022) and multiple national/international honors, her work emphasizes translating evidence into practice to improve older adults' quality of life. She collaborates with institutions like CIUSSS Centre-Sud and the Réseau québécois de recherche sur le vieillissement.
