Marie-Jeanne Kergoat

Marie-Jeanne Kergoat is a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal. She serves as a geriatrician and Head of the Department of Specialized Medicine at the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (IUGM). Additionally, she is the Clinical Researcher at IUGM and Director of the external cognition clinic. Dr. Kergoat directs the specialized geriatrics residency program at Université de Montréal and leads the network program for the four medical faculties in Quebec.

Dr. Kergoat's research focuses on clinical studies of geriatric syndromes in vulnerable elderly populations and evaluative research on healthcare services. Her multidisciplinary approach incorporates both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Her research domains cover nutritional disorders, dementia states, falls and mobility disorders, clinical best practices, quality indicators, and interventions to improve professional intervention quality. She has developed expertise in cognitive health assessment and interventions for elderly populations.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on digital health tools for elderly care, cognitive health assessment methodologies, physical activity prescriptions following hospitalization, and comprehensive approaches to managing geriatric syndromes. These works reflect her commitment to developing practical interventions that can be implemented in clinical settings to improve care for elderly patients.

Dr. Kergoat has received notable recognition for her contributions to geriatric medicine:

She has successfully supervised multiple PhD and Master's students, with her most recent student completing a dissertation on personalized cancer care for head and neck cancer through multimodal risk assessment based on frailty and sarcopenia. Dr. Kergoat has secured substantial research funding from major Canadian and Quebec research agencies including IRSC, FRQS, and FRQSC for numerous projects addressing critical issues in geriatric care.

Dr. Kergoat plays leadership roles in several important research networks including CRIUGM (Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal), RQRV (Réseau québécois de recherche sur le vieillissement), and CIMA-Q (Consortium pour l'identification précoce de la maladie d'Alzheimer). She serves as Director of the Regroupement des Unités de courte durée et des services hospitaliers de gériatrie du Québec (RUSHGQ) and President of the Centre d'excellence en Santé Cognitive du RUIS de Montréal (CESCO).
