Professor Simon Kövesi is a leading scholar of Romantic literature and working-class cultural studies, currently serving as Professor of English and Scottish Literature and Head of Critical Studies at the University of Glasgow. He holds an ORCID ID: 0000-0001-7780-2739. Previously, he served as Professor and Head of School at Oxford Brookes University from 2001–2022.
Education: BA in English Language and Literature (University of Glasgow), PhD in Romantic-period poetry (Nottingham Trent University). Includes a study abroad at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Research focuses on John Clare, working-class literary traditions, ecological humanities, and creative reinterpretations of Romantic-era texts. Notable projects include editing Clare’s poetry, leading the Palgrave Advances in John Clare Studies, and directing the ‘The Meeting’ arts collaboration. His 2017 monograph John Clare: Nature, Criticism and History explores environmental themes in Clare’s work.
Professional roles include REF2021 assessor for Subpanel 27, AHRC Peer Review College member (2017–2020), and Chair of the British Association for Romantic Studies’ First Book Prize (2023–2024). Awards include a Saltire Award shortlist for James Kelman (2007).
Supervision expertise spans 19th/20th-century literature, working-class culture, and environmental humanities. Current PhD supervision includes projects on Red Clydeside poetry and Coleridge’s poetics.
Publications span 46 works including books, edited collections, peer-reviewed articles, and creative collaborations. Active in producing multimedia projects, book reviews, and public lectures on literary topics.
