University of Newcastle Australia (UON)معرفی
Professor Simon Keely is a leading academic in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy at the University of Newcastle. He holds a PhD from University College Dublin and has extensive postdoctoral training at the University of Colorado Denver. As a Professor, he leads the Gastrointestinal Research Group at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and directs the HMRI Immune Health Program. His primary affiliation is with the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health.
Dr. Keely's research focuses on molecular mechanisms in gastrointestinal diseases, including functional disorders (IBS, functional dyspepsia), host-microbiome interactions in IBD, and microbiome-gut-brain axis interactions. His work integrates immunology, microbiology, and translational medicine, with a strong emphasis on clinical translation to improve gastrointestinal health outcomes.
Key research interests include understanding how dietary factors, microbial communities, and immune responses influence gastrointestinal pathologies. His team employs advanced technologies such as metagenomic sequencing and ex vivo models to study disease mechanisms. Notable collaborations include partnerships with Aetheria Therapeutics and Janssen Cilag Pty Ltd.
Dr. Keely has received prestigious awards, including the 2014 John Forte GI/Liver Plenary Award and multiple Outstanding Paper Awards. His work has been supported by grants from the NHMRC and other competitive funding bodies.
His contributions extend to editorial roles and scientific advisory boards, reflecting his leadership in gastrointestinal research. Current projects explore microbiome-driven therapies, post-surgical healing, and the role of dietary interventions in gastrointestinal disorders.
