Simon Hatherley is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), specializing in sustainable building design within the Faculty of Environment and Technology. A registered Architect (ARB/RIBA) and Certified Passivhaus Designer, he brings 20+ years of industry experience from firms including AHMM and Scott Brownrigg.
His educational background includes a BSc (Hons), BArch, MSc, PGCert, and PhD from Cardiff Metropolitan University (2010), which investigated low-carbon rural housing in Wales through embodied energy analysis and thermal modelling.
Hatherley's research focuses on net-zero carbon building delivery across urban, rural, and educational contexts. He developed a net-zero design toolkit via a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with AHMM and contributed to Welsh Government's £500M school program through performance analysis and standards development with Cundall and Gleeds.
He has secured research funding through the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship and KTP projects, collaborating with engineering firms on carbon reduction frameworks. His industry work directly informs national initiatives including the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard and Royal Society of Architects in Wales Climate Group.
