Simon G. Shepherd is a Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College's Thayer School of Engineering. His research focuses on HF radar systems, ionospheric physics, and space weather. He leads the Dartmouth SuperDARN Group, developing radar infrastructure for studying Earth's magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions. Notable achievements include securing DoD funding for radar upgrades (2024) and an NSF grant for radar system development (2019). His work has been featured in Iceland and Azores government collaborations. He teaches courses such as ENGS 20 (Scientific Computing) and ENGS 91 (Numerical Methods).
Education:
- BA in Physics, Middlebury College (1989)
- MS in Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington (1991)
- PhD in Physics, Dartmouth College (1998)
Research Projects: Sub-auroral convection electric fields, mid-latitude radar development, and space weather climatology. His team operates the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN), achieving successful first-light data collection in Iceland (2024).
Awards & Grants:
- Early Career Award (2019)
- NSF Grant for radar systems (2019)
