Dr. Simon Fox is an Associate Professor in Molecular Pathology (Education) at the University of Plymouth's School of Biomedical Sciences. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of bone metastasis, cancer biology, and therapeutic applications of plant-derived compounds cultivated under controlled environmental conditions (Agri-Pharmacy). Current investigations examine preferential metastasis of breast and prostate cancer cells to bone and phytochemical effects on bone remodeling processes.
Research interests include molecular pathology of bone diseases, phytochemical modulation of bone cell activity, hyperbaric oxygen effects on bone metabolism, and sustainable pharmaceutical production through controlled-environment agriculture. He leads research on d-limonene and phytoestrogens as potential bone-targeting therapeutics.
Teaching responsibilities span molecular and cellular biology across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Fox directs multiple modules including Biomedical Investigation and Experimentation, Molecular and Cellular Pathology, and Placements and Employability. As Senior UG Personal Tutor and Non-NHS Placements Coordinator, he oversees student development and experiential learning.
Research funding includes awards from Arthritis Research Campaign, Wellcome Trust, and Diving Diseases Research Centre. He has supervised numerous PhD candidates in cancer biology and bone metabolism research and serves as external examiner for several UK universities.
