Simon Flacks is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice (Law) at the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, University of Sussex, joining in 2022. He previously held roles at the Universities of Westminster and Reading.
His research spans drug law and policy, youth justice, criminology, family law, and human rights. He has collaborated with organizations such as Release, Stopwatch, and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Key publications include work on parental substance use, stop-and-search practices, and the intersection of addiction and criminal justice. His 2025 article in Child and Family Law Quarterly examines regulatory frameworks for parenting, while his 2023 article in Social & Legal Studies interrogates the historical construction of the 'addict-offender.'
Scientific awards include being a Finalist for the Social & Legal Studies Editors' Choice Award (2024). He supervises UG, PG, and PhD theses on topics including drugs, addiction, sexuality, crime, and family law.
