Dr. Simon Ducharme is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and a Researcher at the Douglas Research Centre. He serves as the Scientific Director of the Centre for Precision Psychiatry at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and leads the FTD & Neuropsychiatry Lab within the Aging, Cognition, and Alzheimer's Disease Theme-Based Group. Dr. Ducharme also holds the position of Associate Investigator at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) within the Brain Repair and Integrative Neuroscience (BRaIN) Program at the Montreal Neurological Institute.
Dr. Ducharme earned his medical degree from Université de Montréal, completed a Master's at McGill University, Psychiatry residency at McGill in 2012, and a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry at Harvard University in 2014. He is board-certified in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties and works as a Neuropsychiatrist at the Douglas Mental Health Institute, with a clinical specialty in frontotemporal dementia.
His research program focuses on developing novel neuroimaging diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for frontotemporal dementia, with particular emphasis on distinguishing behavioral variant FTD from primary psychiatric disorders. Dr. Ducharme's work combines translational studies using structural and functional imaging to improve early diagnostic markers for neurodegenerative diseases. His research spans multiple areas including precision psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, biomarker development, and the application of artificial intelligence to identify better treatments for psychiatric disorders.
Dr. Ducharme serves as the Montreal site Principal Investigator for the Genetic Frontotemporal Dementia Initiative (GENFI) study and the FTD team leader for the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA). He is also the current chair of the American Neuropsychiatric Association committee on research and oversees multiple clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
- Research Leadership: Scientific Director of the Centre for Precision Psychiatry, Montreal site PI for GENFI, FTD team leader for CCNA
- Professional Recognition: FRQS-funded Senior Clinical Research Scholar, recipient of over 35 awards including the 2013 Career Development Award from the American Neuropsychiatric Association
- Clinical Focus: Neuropsychiatry with specialty in frontotemporal dementia, working at the Cognitive Health Clinic
Dr. Ducharme's work bridges clinical practice and research, with significant contributions to understanding the neurobiological basis of neuropsychiatric disorders and developing better diagnostic approaches for complex cases where psychiatric symptoms may mask underlying neurodegenerative conditions.
