Simon Dieter is a distinguished legal scholar and former academic leader in European legal history. He served as Emeritus Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute (since 2004), Director of the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (1980–2004), and Chair of Civil Law and Roman Law at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (1968–1991). His career began with a Research Assistant role at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (1964–1967).
