Simon Dell is a Researcher at the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas within the School of World Art Studies and Museology at the University of East Anglia. He holds a BA (First Class Honours) and PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art (1992–1995). His research focuses on photography’s role in colonial contexts, interwar Europe’s political visual culture, and post-1960 art practices. He has held numerous administrative roles, including Head of School and Director of Research.
Research interests include colonial photography, Soviet propaganda imagery, and the intersection of art with political processes. His publications span journals like Art History and Labour History Review, with notable works like The Portrait and the Colonial Imaginary (2020). He has supervised doctoral research on topics ranging from British feminist art practices to Fascist cultural debates.
Current projects include a book on Communism and photography, and studies of Walter and Rita Nurnberg’s work. His 2008 British Academy-funded project explored art and place in postmodern contexts. Teaching interests cover modernism, photography history, and art historiography.
