Simon Courtenay is a Professor and Director of the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability (SERS) at the University of Waterloo. He is actively involved in aquatic ecology research, focusing on coastal and estuarine environments, and serves as a Fellow of the Canadian Rivers Institute. Additionally, he is affiliated with the University of Waterloo Water Institute and the Ocean Canada Partnership.
- Expertise in environmental monitoring, nutrient budgets, and integrated water management
- Teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental assessment
Prior to joining the University of Waterloo as Scientific Director of the Canadian Water Network in 2013, Simon spent 25 years as a research scientist for Fisheries and Oceans Canada in New Brunswick. His research spans diverse projects, including:
- Integrated management of the lower Grand River and Lake Erie
- Coastal and marine management in the Bay of Fundy
- Impact of agricultural chemicals on estuarine biota in Prince Edward Island (PEI)
- Use of benthic macroinvertebrates for monitoring urbanization effects
- Citizen-science programs for marine environmental quality in PEI
- Health monitoring of Saint John Harbour using caged bivalves
