Professor Simon Cooper is a part-time faculty member in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University (ECU). He specializes in patient safety, healthcare education, and emergency care, with a focus on clinical deterioration and simulation-based training. He is the primary developer of the Team Emergency Assessment Measure (TEAM) and the First2Act patient deterioration program, both internationally recognized tools. Cooper has contributed to the development of the National Placement Evaluation Centre, which oversees clinical placements for nursing and midwifery students across Australia.
Education: Cooper holds a PhD (2000), Master of Education (2002), and Bachelor of Arts with Honours (1992), all from England. His academic background includes prior roles at the University of Plymouth (UK), Monash University, and Federation University Australia.
Research Interests: His work spans patient safety frameworks, inter-professional education, simulation technologies, and clinical team performance. Key projects include validating the TEAM tool across 15 languages and analyzing over 130,000 virtual simulation scenarios through First2Act.
