Dr Simon Carson is a researcher at the University of York's Department of Education, affiliated with the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG). He focuses on improving science teaching through the Best Evidence Science Teaching (BEST) project, emphasizing engagement, scientific literacy, and formative assessment. His academic background includes a PhD in theoretical high-energy physics from the University of Edinburgh and a PGCE in mathematics and physics from the University of Cambridge.
With 35 years of teaching experience in Yorkshire schools, he previously served as head teacher of a rural secondary school and held leadership roles in curriculum development, staff training, and assessment. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist, and contributes to the Open University as an associate lecturer in science foundation courses and quantum mechanics.
His research interests revolve around enhancing science education through evidence-based practices, addressing student misconceptions, and fostering effective teaching methodologies. He has collaborated with examination boards, the Institute of Physics, and journals like Physics Education and Physics Review.
