Professor Simon Bottrell is affiliated with the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, where he specializes in environmental isotope geochemistry. His work focuses on applying stable isotope and geochemical tracers to geology, hydrogeology, and ecosystems, particularly for studying contaminant behavior, fate, and biodegradation in terrestrial and groundwater environments.
- Education:
- BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences (Geology and Mineralogy) from Oxford
- PhD in Environmental Sciences (Geochemistry) from the University of East Anglia (UEA)
Simon has over 35 years of experience using stable isotope tracers in geology and environmental science, with significant contributions to sedimentary geochemistry and hydrochemistry. His research includes studies on sedimentary geochemistry, groundwater systems, and the application of isotope tracers to understand contaminant behavior and biodegradation processes.
Simon Bottrell is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, a distinction he has held since 2008. This recognition underscores his contributions to the field of geoscience and his professional standing within the academic community.
Simon currently teaches applied hydrogeology and contaminant behavior at the Masters level, as well as hydrogeology at the undergraduate level. He has a strong passion for field teaching and has participated in field classes across various undergraduate courses, drawing on his consultancy experience to ensure the material's relevance to current professional practice.
At the University of Leeds, Simon established a stable isotope laboratory in the late 1980s. This facility has been instrumental in advancing his research into sedimentary geochemistry and hydrochemistry, providing a practical platform for analyzing stable isotopes in diverse environmental contexts.
