Professor Jean E Moran is a faculty member in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at California State University, East Bay since 2008. Previously, she served as a research scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Her research focuses on isotope hydrology, contaminant hydrogeology, and groundwater management, with active collaboration with LLNL's Isotopic Tracers and Transport group. She emphasizes experiential learning in teaching.
Research Interests: Dr. Moran investigates groundwater recharge mechanisms, isotopic tracers (e.g., stable isotopes, radon, noble gases), and climate change impacts on water resources. Her work addresses critical issues like groundwater sustainability in California's San Joaquin Valley and mountainous regions.
Key Projects: She leads studies on groundwater-surface water interactions, nitrate contamination dynamics, and the application of novel tracers (e.g., 35S, noble gases) to monitor aquifer systems. Her research spans alpine basins (e.g., Sagehen Creek, Mount Shasta) and urban watersheds.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with LLNL's Isotopic Tracers group and participates in the California GAMA groundwater monitoring program. Her work integrates field measurements with advanced isotopic techniques to inform water policy.
