Simeon J. Newman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Arts and Science. His research focuses on revising theories of political domination through a comparative-historical lens, emphasizing temporal sensitivity and methodological rigor.
- Education: PhD (2023) and MA (2014) in Sociology from the University of Michigan; BA (2011) in Sociology and History from UC Berkeley.
His empirical work examines urban population growth and political dynamics in 20th-century Mexico City, revealing non-linear impacts on the Institutional Revolutionary Party. Newman also explores revolutions, counterrevolutions, and passive revolutions in his upcoming comparative study. He has taught courses on capitalism, revolutions, and contemporary social theory.
Publications include analyses of narrative forms, comparative-historical methods, and critical race and ethnic studies. Newman is fluent in English, Spanish (Latin American), and has reading proficiency in French and German.
