Beck’s work examines the interplay between revolutions, radicalism, and terrorism, often using comparative frameworks. Key themes include the cultural and structural origins of revolutionary waves, the media’s role in labeling militant groups, and the transnational diffusion of human rights norms in constitutions. His award-winning 2015 book, Radicals, Revolutionaries, and Terrorists, synthesizes historical and contemporary case studies to explore radical political movements.
His recent projects include a meta-analysis of revolution studies methodologies and investigations into corruption grievances in modern revolutions. Beck has received recognition for both his research and teaching, including the ASA Outstanding Article Award (2015) and multiple teaching honors from Stanford University.
At Pomona, he teaches courses on global systems, sociological theory, and social movements. His collaborative work extends to co-editing volumes like On Revolutions: Unruly Politics in the Contemporary World (2022), which reimagines theoretical approaches to revolution studies.
