Silvia Suteu

Silvia Suteu is a Full Professor at the European University Institute's Department of Law specializing in comparative constitutional law and democratic theory. She holds a Chair in Law and focuses on deliberative constitutional change, gender-sensitive constitution-making, and eternity clauses in democratic systems.

Her research explores constitutional entrenchment mechanisms, transitional justice, and gendered dimensions of democratic backsliding. She leads the Feminist Judgments in Central and Eastern Europe Project and co-leads international research on unwritten constitutional norms.

Professor Suteu's publications predominantly analyze constitutional design challenges in post-communist states, judicial review mechanisms, and gender equality frameworks. Her 2021 monograph received the ICON-S Best Book Prize for advancing constitutional theory.

She serves as Gender Editor for the Lex Atlas COVID-19 project and sits on the editorial board of the European Constitutional Law Review. Professor Suteu has consulted on constitutional reform processes globally and holds visiting positions at the University of Zurich and LUISS Guido Carli.
