Dr. Silpsupa Jaengsawang is a member of the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). Her research focuses on the material and cultural dimensions of manuscripts from Laos and Northern Thailand, particularly exploring interactions between religious institutions and lay communities. She has led projects analyzing colophons in Lao manuscripts and investigating the transformation of Anisong manuscripts through printing technologies.
Key research areas include manuscript materiality, ritual use of texts, and preservation challenges in pre-modern Southeast Asian literary traditions. Her work combines interdisciplinary methods from material science, cultural anthropology, and religious studies. Recent publications address material choices in written artifacts, analysis of 19th-20th century manuscript materials, and the social roles of manuscripts in funeral rituals.
