Giuseppe Marotta is a Doctoral Researcher and Research Associate at the University of Hamburg's Center for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC). His work focuses on the material analysis of early Islamic manuscripts, particularly the use of parchment in Arabic manuscripts from the formative centuries of Islam. He is affiliated with the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ (2019–2025) and leads research on project RFK07: The Use of Parchment in Arabic Manuscripts of the Early Islamic Centuries.
His research integrates interdisciplinary approaches to manuscript studies, including material science, historical palaeography, and cultural heritage preservation. The project explores how parchment production, conservation, and scribal practices reflect socio-cultural dynamics in early Islamic societies.
