Sigrid Schottenius Cullhed is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in literary studies at Uppsala University's Department of Literature and Rhetoric. She also serves as a visiting researcher at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) and chairs the board for the Centre for Medical Humanities in Uppsala. As a member of the management team for WOMHER (Women's Mental Health during the Reproductive Lifespan) and the Young Academy of Sweden, her academic influence spans multiple institutions and research networks.
Dr. Schottenius Cullhed earned her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Gothenburg in 2012, with a dissertation on the late Roman poet Faltonia Betitia Proba. Prior to this, she completed a Master's degree in Comparative Literature from Stockholm University in 2007, with minors in French and Latin. During her doctoral studies, she spent a year at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (2009-2010).
Her research primarily focuses on gender history, classical studies, and the reception of ancient narratives in contemporary contexts, particularly examining representations of sexual violence and consent across historical periods. She combines language-technology methods with narratological, reception-historical, and intermedial perspectives to explore how literature and film influence social norms and understandings of individual autonomy. Her current projects include 'The Reception of Vanessa Springora's Consent' (2025-2028), examining shifting attitudes toward sexual consent across generations in France, and 'Proba: The Story of the First Christian Woman Poet,' to be published by Oxford University Press.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent engagement with themes of gender, power, and narrative across historical periods. Her work frequently examines mythological narratives of sexual violence (particularly the Philomela/Prokne myth), their ancient sources, and their contemporary adaptations. She demonstrates expertise in connecting classical literature with modern social issues, especially regarding consent, trauma, and women's voices. Her methodological approach blends traditional philological analysis with digital humanities techniques and interdisciplinary perspectives from gender studies and medical humanities.
Dr. Schottenius Cullhed has received significant research funding from prestigious organizations:
- Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation for 'The Reception of Vanessa Springora's Consent' project (2025-2028)
- Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ Sabbatical) for her book project 'Proba: The Story of the First Christian Woman Poet'
- Swedish Research Council for the 'Philomela Returns' project (2020-2023)
- European Union's Horizon 2020 program for the MotherNet project
As an academic advisor, she co-supervises Daniela Lillhannus' interdisciplinary research project 'Stories of Rape Trauma: Narratological and Psychotraumatological Perspectives' through WOMHER's Research School. Her leadership extends to chairing the Centre for Medical Humanities in Uppsala and serving on the steering committee for WOMHER. She has also mentored numerous students through her various research projects and teaching responsibilities at Uppsala University.
Dr. Schottenius Cullhed is actively involved with several research centers and networks. She chairs the Centre for Medical Humanities in Uppsala and is a member of the management team for WOMHER. She leads the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg-funded project on Vanessa Springora's 'Consent' and serves as a Work Package Leader for the EU-funded MotherNet project. Her upcoming fellowship at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (autumn 2025) and previous affiliation with the Oxford Centre for Late Antiquity (spring 2025) demonstrate her international research collaborations.
