Professor Nilsson's research focuses on literary adaptation and translation across languages and time periods, with particular expertise in Byzantine literature, especially fiction from twelfth-century Byzantium. Her work explores narratology, literary spatiality, and the connections between historical context and literary production. She examines how texts function within their social and political environments, with special attention to occasional literature commissioned by imperial or aristocratic patrons. Her current research project "Retracing Connections" investigates diachronic literary relationships and adaptations.
Her editorial contributions include serving as editor (with David Ricks) of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies (2020-24), editor of Studia Byzantina Upsaliensia, and associate editor of Brill's Narratological Commentaries to Ancient Texts. She sits on the editorial boards of Ancient Narrative, Cultural Interactions in the Mediterranean, FABULAE, JOLCEL, Scandinavian Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, and Transcript.
Among her notable recognitions:
- Pro Futura Fellow, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (2006-2010)
- Judge on the panel for the literary Runciman Award (since spring 2024)
Professor Nilsson leads the LangLit research group and is deeply involved in mentoring junior researchers. Her work bridges classical scholarship with contemporary theoretical frameworks, particularly in narratology and spatial studies. She has been instrumental in establishing Byzantine literature as a vibrant field of study with relevance to broader literary theory.
She is currently leading the "Retracing Connections" research project, which explores literary adaptation across time periods and cultural contexts. Her work connects Byzantine literature with modern theoretical concerns, creating innovative approaches to understanding narrative transmission and transformation.
