Sibani Lisa Biswal is the Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University and holds the William M. McCardell Professorship in Chemical Engineering. She also serves as Senior Associate Dean in the George R. Brown School of Engineering and has a joint appointment in Materials Science and NanoEngineering.
Education:
- B.S., Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology (1999)
- M.S., Chemical Engineering, Stanford University (2001)
- Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, Stanford University (2004)
- Postdoc, Mechanical Engineering, University of California Berkeley (2004-2006)
Research Overview: Her work focuses on understanding the chemical, physical, and dynamic properties of colloidal and interfacial systems, particularly soft materials that self-assemble at mesoscopic scales. Key research areas include (i) magnetically directed colloidal assemblies, (ii) multiphase fluid flow using microfluidic systems, (iii) biomimetic interfacial interactions, and (iv) inorganic-organic composites for energy storage. Her studies leverage fundamental insights into surface forces and rheology to address technological challenges.
Scientific Recognition:
- Young Investigator Award (Office of Naval Research)
- NSF CAREER Award
- George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching
Advising & Leadership: Dr. Biswal has advised over 30 doctoral students and published 130+ peer-reviewed works. She joined Rice University in 2006 and contributes to academic leadership as Associate Dean for Faculty Development.
