David Pine is the Silver Professor of Physics and Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at New York University (NYU), where he chairs the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department since 2014. He directs the Pine Research Group at the Center for Soft Matter Research, focusing on soft mesoscopic materials including colloids, emulsions, and DNA-coated particles. Pine earned his PhD in Physics from Cornell University.
His research spans self-assembly mechanisms, colloidal dynamics, and active matter systems, with applications in photonics, rheology, and biomimetic materials. Recent work explores DNA-directed colloidal crystallization, lock-and-key particle interactions, and hydrodynamic reversibility in complex fluids.
Pine's publications emphasize nanoscale material design, with recurring themes in colloidal engineering, non-equilibrium physics, and polymer-colloid hybrids. His 15 most cited works include breakthroughs in patchy colloids and random organization theory.
Scientific Awards & Honors:
- Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Guggenheim Fellow
- Society of Rheology Publication of the Year (2000)
- Langmuir Lecturer, American Chemical Society
He mentors through the Pine Research Group and has held visiting chairs including the Michelin Chair at ESPCI ParisTech. Current grants support work on colloidal diamonds and active swimmers.
