Dr. Sian Edwards is a Senior Lecturer in Modern British History at the University of Winchester’s School of Humanities. She holds a PhD in Contemporary History from the University of Sussex, completed in 2014. Her research focuses on youth cultures, gender, and rural history in twentieth-century Britain, challenging urban-centric narratives through studies of youth organizations and rural experiences. She has taught at multiple universities since 2010.
Her doctoral work examined the countryside’s role in British youth organizations’ training (1930–1960), published as a book in 2018. Key research interests include the intersection of gender and rural life, youth movements’ citizenship education, and the evolution of imperialist ideas in scouting movements.
Dr. Edwards has presented at international conferences on topics such as pacifism in youth movements during WWII, rural youth experiences, and the role of domesticity in Girl Guide organizations. Her work often highlights marginalized histories, such as women’s roles in agricultural clubs and education for courtship in the 1950s.
She actively engages with interdisciplinary approaches, blending social, cultural, and economic history to uncover the complexities of rural and youth histories.
