Dr. Shupei Yuan is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University. She holds a Ph.D. in Information and Media and a master's in Advertising from Michigan State University, and a bachelor's in Advertising from South China University of Technology. Her affiliations include the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability and Energy, the Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability, and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
Her research explores strategic science communication, focusing on improving public-scientist trust through studies on communication styles (aggressive, humorous, polite), science advocacy, and crisis messaging. She investigates topics like climate change debates, vaccine hesitancy, and AI ethics in science dissemination. Her work emphasizes long-term engagement frameworks and infrastructure support for communicators.
Yuan's recent publications analyze trends in environmental ethics (e.g., corporate carbon offsetting), health communication (e.g., vaccine messaging frameworks), and AI-mediated discourse. A consistent theme is the intersection of emotional rhetoric, public trust, and behavioral outcomes across digital and traditional media.
