Shuai Shao serves as a McWane Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering and holds the position of Associate Director for Research and Innovation at the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME).
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering & Automation from Beijing University of Chemical Technology
Dr. Shao's research expertise spans multiple advanced engineering disciplines with a strong focus on additive manufacturing technologies. His work encompasses:
- Materials science and characterization of additively manufactured components
- Computational modeling of material behavior at multiple scales
- Analysis of solid interfaces in manufactured parts
- Multiscale simulation techniques for predicting material performance
- Structural integrity assessment of additively manufactured metallic materials
As Associate Director for Research and Innovation at NCAME, Dr. Shao plays a pivotal role in securing and managing substantial research funding from major federal agencies including NASA, NSF, U.S. Army, NIST, and FAA. NCAME has received numerous awards totaling millions of dollars for research on additive manufacturing qualification, materials testing, and microstructural characterization.
Dr. Shao is integral to the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME), founded in 2017 through a collaboration between Auburn University and NASA. The center functions as a hub for advancing additive manufacturing knowledge transfer and works collaboratively with industry partners, government agencies, and academic institutions to address standards development and workforce training needs in this rapidly evolving field. NCAME's facilities include state-of-the-art equipment for metal 3D printing, mechanical testing across extreme temperature ranges, and advanced material characterization techniques.
