Nima Shamsaei is the Philpott-WestPoint Stevens Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME) at Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toledo, an M.S. from Sharif University of Technology, and a B.S. from Isfahan University of Technology.
His research focuses on additive manufacturing (AM), 3D printing, fatigue and fracture mechanics, failure analysis, and mechanical behavior of materials. He leads NCAME, which collaborates with NASA, the U.S. Army, and industry partners on advanced AM research, including materials qualification, process optimization, and high-temperature applications.
Recent grants include NSF awards for rapid qualification of AM components and Army funding for metal AM qualification research. He has received prestigious honors such as the Auburn University Faculty Award and delivered the 2024-25 Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecture.
Key contributions include studies on defect criticality in AM materials, fatigue behavior of alloys like Inconel 718 and Ti-6Al-4V, and non-destructive detection techniques. His work bridges fundamental material science with industrial AM applications, emphasizing safety-critical components in aerospace and medical fields.
