Dr Shu Wen Wen is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Inflammatory Disease, affiliated with Monash Health and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University. She is actively engaged in research on stroke, immunity, and aging, and is currently serving as a Chief Investigator on multiple research projects. She is accepting PhD students for supervision.
Education:
- PhD, Award Date: 28 Feb 2013
- Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) with first class honours, University of Melbourne, Award Date: 31 Dec 2008
- Bachelor of Biomedical Science, University of Melbourne, Award Date: 31 Dec 2007
Her research focuses on stroke-induced immune dysfunction, particularly the communication between the brain and peripheral organs such as the lungs and gut. She investigates how stroke alters neutrophil function, induces pneumonia, and disrupts gut motility through neuroimmune pathways. Her work also explores the role of aging and dietary factors in modulating inflammation and infection susceptibility. She utilizes advanced imaging, molecular biology, and systems immunology approaches.
Recent publications highlight her contributions to understanding brain-lung and brain-gut axes post-stroke, identifying molecular targets for stroke-associated complications, and discovering biomarkers in cancer and sepsis. Her research is interdisciplinary, involving collaborations across immunology, neuroscience, and critical care.
Scientific Awards:
- CASS Foundation Travel Award (2018)
Dr Wen is a key contributor to several active research grants, including the MEGA-dose aSCORbatE for Sepsis (MEGASCORES) program. She leads projects on brain-lung communication and molecular targets in stroke-associated pneumonia. She collaborates extensively with leading researchers such as Prof. Christopher Wong, Prof. Rinaldo Bellomo, and Dr. Yuge Lankadeva. She has no listed lab or team of her own but is deeply embedded in collaborative research networks.
