Shobita Parthasarathy is a Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. Her work focuses on the comparative and international politics of science and technology, emphasizing how innovation policy can advance equity and social justice. She directs the Technology Assessment Project, which evaluates emerging technologies like AI, and hosts the Received Wisdom podcast, exploring science and technology governance.
- Education: PhD and MA in Science and Technology Studies from Cornell University; AB in Biology from the University of Chicago.
Her research interests include governance of emerging technologies, inclusive innovation, and the intersection of science policy with race, gender, and global inequality. Recent work examines equity in AI and biotechnology, including how patent systems and innovation frameworks exacerbate disparities. Parthasarathy’s award-winning book Patent Politics (2017) won the Robert K. Merton Prize, and her earlier work influenced the 2013 U.S. Supreme Court case on gene patents.
Publications highlight themes like AI ethics, vaccine equity, and the societal impacts of innovation. She advises global institutions, including the National Academies’ Committee on Science for Judges and the Sloan Foundation’s Technology Advisory Board. Current projects address equitable innovation in global health and tech-for-good initiatives in India.
