Shobita Mampilly is a Lost & Found Archival Research Fellow and doctoral candidate in Urban Education at the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY), developing engaged science curricula through spirituality and environmental activism. Her interdisciplinary approach activates student agency across diverse settings from Bangalore to The Bronx.
Her academic credentials include:
- BS in Biology from Indiana University
- MA in Secondary Science Education from Columbia University
- MFA in Creative Writing/Poetry from The New School University
Her dissertation research explores Engaged Science through Spirituality and Activism, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's educational philosophy. She develops pathways for young scholars entering health and environmental science fields while building STEM matriculation networks through initiatives like the Trashonomics curriculum, which transforms dying ecosystems into sustainable biomes via collaborations with The Anonymous Indian Trust in Bangalore.
She has received the Lost & Found Archival Research Fellowship, supporting her archival research projects showcased at annual fellows events.
As a doctoral student, Shobita mentors through curriculum development rather than formal graduate advising. Her professional activities include presenting "Teaching Social Justice through Engaged Science" at the NAIS People of Color Conference and maintaining lifetime membership in Etheridge Knight’s Free Peoples Poetry Workshop, where she integrates poetic expression with scientific inquiry.
