Vallerie Matos is an Adjunct Professor in the English and Black & Latinx Studies departments at Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY), and an English PhD Candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her work bridges academic scholarship with community engagement in Black and Latinx cultural production.

Research Interests: Vallerie’s scholarship centers on Sound Studies, Glossolalia, and Afro-diasporic epistemologies, with emphasis on archival recovery of marginalized narratives. She examines sonic practices in diasporic communities and the intersection of language, spirituality, and cultural memory through literary and anthropological lenses, particularly within Nuyorican and Caribbean contexts.

Teaching and Leadership: As Associate Director for Black & Latinx Publics at Baruch College and the Mellon Foundation, she develops programming including the Afro-Latinidades Symposium and Lost & Found Fellows Showcase. Her prior five-year role as Program Director for an arts-based youth justice initiative informs her community-centered pedagogy as a Teaching Fellow. Current projects involve collaborative work with Nuyorican Artists in the Cafe working groups.
