Dr. Shivaji Mukherjee is an Associate Professor and Somjee Chair of Indian Political Development in the Department of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. His research analyzes colonial legacies, civil war, and insurgency dynamics in South Asia.
Key work examines how historical institutions of indirect rule contributed to Maoist insurgency in India through land inequality and weak state capacity. Current projects investigate persistent insurgencies in Kashmir and Punjab, and ethnic violence.
Publications include the award-winning book 'Colonial Institutions and Civil War' and articles on pre-colonial warfare impacts. Research employs mixed methods including fieldwork, archival research, and subnational quantitative analysis.
