Shirley Yee is a Professor in the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Department at the University of Washington, Seattle since 1988. Her research focuses on U.S. women’s history, racial formation, and the intersection of race/gender/ethnicity in historical contexts. She has published seminal works including Black Women Abolitionists (1992, Pulitzer Prize nominee) and An Immigrant Neighborhood (2011). Currently, she explores the history of the U.S. funeral business and mourning wear production.
Her teaching spans courses on feminist history, gender studies, and racial formation. Her research has appeared in differences, Frontiers, and Journal of Urban History. Awards include recognition for her groundbreaking work on Black women abolitionists.
